Accommodation Tax Committee
About Committee
A municipality receiving more than $50,000 in revenue from the state accommodation tax must appoint an advisory committee to make recommendations for how the revenue generated from the accommodation tax should be spent. These funds must be used for tourism-related expenditures. Tourist is defined as anyone traveling at least 50 miles from home.
The committee is currently taking application requests for the following:
- Advertising and tourism promotion to develop and increase tourist attendance through publicity.
- Arts and cultural events promotion.
- Construction, maintenance, and operation of facilities for civic and cultural activities, including construction and maintenance of access and other nearby roads and utilities for the facilities.
- Criminal justice system, law enforcement, fire protection, solid waste collection and health facilities when required to serve tourists and tourist facilities. The amount is based on the estimated percentage of costs directly attributed to tourists.
- Public facilities such as restrooms, dressing rooms, parks and parking lots used to service tourism.
- Tourist shuttle transportation.
- Control and repair of waterfront erosion.
- Operation of visitor information centers.
The advisory committee submits written recommendations to Council at least once annually. The report addresses how to spend the portion of accommodations tax revenue that remains after allocations are made to the general fund and the tourism and promotion funds. Council may accept, reject or modify these recommendations.
